How to Reorder PDF Pages (Free, on Windows, Drag and Drop)

Reordering PDF pages is nearly always cleanup after something else went slightly wrong — a scanner that fed the stack backwards, a merge done in the wrong sequence, an appendix that belongs at the end. A drag-and-drop thumbnail grid turns it into a two-minute job.

The short answer

1. Open PDF Organizer from the BizTray tray.
2. Add the PDF — you get a grid of page thumbnails.
3. Drag pages into the order you want.
4. Save to a new file.

Nothing uploads, and there is no cap on how many pages the grid will hold.

The patterns worth recognising

Most out-of-order documents are out of order in one of a few predictable ways. Spotting the pattern saves you dragging pages one at a time:

• Reversed. The whole document runs last-to-first, from a scanner fed the wrong way or a stack picked up upside down. Reverse the lot in one action rather than dragging.
• Fronts then backs. A single-sided scanner run over a double-sided stack gives you pages 1, 3, 5… followed by 6, 4, 2. The second half is usually in reverse, because of how the stack gets flipped. Reverse the back half, then interleave.
• One page in the wrong place. An appendix that landed in the middle, a cover that ended up second. Single drag.

Why a thumbnail grid matters

You cannot reliably reorder what you cannot see. Tools that ask you to type a page sequence — "1,5,2,3,4" — work fine for four pages and become guesswork at forty. The failure mode is quiet: you produce a plausible order that is wrong in the middle, and nobody notices until someone reads it.

A grid shows you the shape of the document. Reversed sections, duplicated pages and blank scanner backs are all obvious at a glance, and you can fix orientation and remove junk in the same pass rather than making three trips.

What reordering does and does not change

• Quality is untouched. Pages are rearranged, not re-rendered. Text stays selectable, images keep their resolution.
• Printed page numbers move with their pages. They are drawn on, so a reordered document reads 1, 2, 7, 3. If continuous numbering matters, add page numbers after reordering.
• Bookmarks follow their targets in a well-formed file, but internal links can end up pointing somewhere unhelpful. Worth a check on documents that relied on them.
• The original is untouched when you save to a new file.

Doing it on your own machine

• Fix orientation and remove blanks first, then reorder. Rearranging pages you are about to delete is wasted work.
• Zoom the thumbnails if pages look similar. Reordering the wrong near-identical page is the classic error.
